Market Analysis
Podcast Landscape
True crime podcasts are one of the most consumed genres in Australia and internationally. However, many shows lean toward sensationalism and often focus on the perpetrator, detailing their background, psychology, and crimes. This framing risks overshadowing victims, reducing them to supporting characters in their own stories.
Victim-Focused Storytelling
There has been a growing demand for media that shifts focus toward victims and their communities. Examples include podcasts such as The Teachers Pet (Australia) or Believed (NPR, US), which gained traction not only for their investigative reporting but also for their empathetic treatment of victims’ voices. This trend suggests audiences are looking for narratives that prioritise respect, remembrance, and community impact rather than glorifying perpetrators.
